Charity Spotlight - Buglife

Please tell us briefly about Buglife and the work that you do ?

Buglife is the only organisation in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates. We’re actively working to save Britain’s rarest little animals, everything from bees to beetles, worms to woodlice and jumping spiders to jellyfish. The food we eat, the fish we catch, the birds we see, the flowers we smell and the hum of life we hear, simply would not exist without bugs. Buglife’s aim is to halt the extinction of invertebrate species and to achieve sustainable populations of invertebrates. Buglife undertake practical conservation work to support bugs such as the UK wide B-Lines network, we also campaign to improve legislation and save key sites. Our current priority areas are: pollinators, freshwater and soil as well as any species at risk of extinction.

How do donations help Buglife?

Donations give Buglife unrestricted money which enables us to spend it where it is most needed when required rather than have to apply and wait for finance. This money plays a vital role in enabling us to respond rapidly to emerging threats to our bugs.

What impact does working with Evergreen have on your charity?

When you consider 20 pence is enough to buy the seed to create one square metre of pollinator rich habitat  the difference our partnership with Evergreen can make is well illustrated. At Buglife we pride ourselves on making best use of our money so the contributions from Evergreen are hugely important in supporting our work.

How else can people support you?

Buglife is a membership organisation so joining is a great way to support. Other than that read some of the great tips on our website on things to do to benefit bugs in your own space. Many of these will also save you time and money.

Which campaigns are you currently running and how can people get involved?

We are running a number of citizen science surveys that people can join in such as PotWatch looking out for invasive flatworms, Bugs Matter the number plate splat counter. We are also fighting to save Swanscombe Marshes from development  so sign the petition. Also check out to see if you live or work on a B-Line and if you do, do something positive for pollinators and load the information up. We also have an overarching campaign called No Insectinction if you sign up to support you will get some great tips and free seeds.
