Charity Spotlight - Helping Rhinos

Please tell us briefly about Helping Rhinos and the work that you do ?

The rhino is critically endangered and doing nothing would inexorably lead to their extinction. With a holistic and innovative approach to rhino conservation, Helping Rhinos has gone from strength to strength in the ten years since its inception and has raised over £2.25 million to further its goal to create and protect Rhino Strongholds across Africa and allow rhino populations to expand and flourish for generations to come.  With our planned initiatives we will help to reverse the decline in rhino populations, restore and rewild degraded habitat and demonstrate the benefits of rhino conservation to other wildlife species, to the livelihoods of local communities and to the planet.

How will donations assist Helping Rhinos?

Helping Rhinos works closely with passionate and dedicated partners, both internationally and on the ground, in the heart of rhino habitats. Your donations directly contribute to these projects to care for orphaned rhinos, support anti-poaching patrols with the Black Mambas and help the monitoring and growth of black and white rhino populations, which together provide a sustainable future for all species of rhino.

What impact will working with companies like Evergreen have on your charity?

Working with like minded organisations like Evergreen, who have a desire to protect and secure the natural world, as well as understanding the importance of collaboration, ensuring rhinos and other wildlife have a future. If Evergreen can reach and engage a new community of supporters, the more people who love rhinos the better!

Which campaigns are you currently running and how can people get involved?

We have just launched a new campaign last Friday to raise urgent funds for Lucky Girl. A female rhino calf who was recently dramatically rescued and brought to the Zululand Rhino Orphanage (ZRO)

The calf’s mother had been one of the victims of the devastating onslaught of poachers in the area, and after the rhino cow’s body was found, it took rangers over three days to find the baby rhino calf.

During this time, the rhino calf had been on her own without milk and water, highly traumatised by the whole experience of her mother’s death. When rangers did locate her, she was so stressed that during the process of capturing her, she ran for over 3km before the team managed to get her.

When found, she was rushed to the orphanage and the ZRO staff have, for now, nicknamed her Lucky Girl after her very lucky survival in the wild on her own where the team at the ZRO prepared the Intensive Care Unit container ready for her arrival.

At times like this, every detail is important and speed is of the essence. On arrival, the calf was weighed and estimated to be around six months old. Despite her ordeal and being a little dehydrated, her condition was okay.

She was seen by the orphanage’s regular vet, Trever who did a thorough check on her. Once she was settled, she was offered a small milk bottle but unfortunately she wouldn’t take it and there began a worrying time for the orphanage as even 24 hours later she still would not take the milk bottle.

It’s a critical time for Lucky Girl as the team work round the clock to ensure her survival. Please help support Lucky Girl by donating –
